Awards, Bursaries and Placements

Each year some Awards, Placements and Bursaries are offered in conjunction with the RSIC. In all cases Conference delegate fees are waived for the award winner, bursary recipients or successful placement candidates.

If you are submitting nominations or applications on behalf of your students, or have students that are submitting applications themselves, please include them in the student numbers specified on your Letter of Commitment (LoC). When you upload your signed LoC you will be asked whether any of the students included in your numbers have pending bursary applications, on the understanding that you will be able to remove them from the total if you need to do so at a future point, should their application be unsuccessful.

For the RSIC2022 your students can apply for ONE of the following (they cannot apply for more than one):

Awards

Two awards will be offered in conjunction with the RSIC2022, each associated with one of the Round Square IDEALS (Leadership and Service):

The Rod Fraser Leadership Award

One merit-based leadership scholarship, available to a student from a Round Square Global Member School, covering the full delegate fee and a contribution towards travel up to a maximum of £2,000. This Award will be made for the first time in 2022 in remembrance of former RS Chairman, Roderick D Fraser, who passed away in March 2021. The Rod Fraser Leadership Award will be presented annually to a student from a Round Square school whose leadership capability and potential is demonstrated in their actions to date and their ambitions for the future.

To enter for the award a student must submit a written statement of no more than 600 words outlining:

(1) the ways in which they have demonstrated leadership capacity and potential in their actions to date, and

(2) how they believe their participation in the RSIC will help them to develop their leadership skills for the future.

Each application must be supported by a letter from the Head of School and a peer endorsement/ citation of no more than 400 words from the applicant’s fellow students at their school. Entries should be submitted by the Round Square Rep (please ensure you have all three documents ready).

The closing date for the Rod Fraser Leadership Award is 1st May 2022. The award recipient will be informed by the 10th of May so that they can make arrangements to attend the conference in the UK in September.

Bursaries

Discovery Bursaries

Ten Discovery Bursaries are available to cover delegate fees for those students from Round Square Global Member Schools whose financial circumstances mean that they could not otherwise participate in the conference. Discovery Bursaries cover the full cost of delegate fees for the RSIC, but participants (or their school) will be responsible for funding their own flights/ travel to and from country.

In order to put forward a student for a Discovery Bursary, the RS Rep will be asked to explain on the application form why, without this bursary, their student would otherwise be unable to finance their own Conference participation. The application must be supported a signed letter from the Head of School confirming the student’s financial circumstances, attached to the online form.

Bursary applicants are asked to make every effort to part-fund their participation in other ways and will be asked to outline what they have done to supplement their bursary application with income from other sources (e.g. part-time work or personal fundraising).

Successful applicants will agree to submit a full report to the Round Square following the RSIC. In accepting a Bursary, applicants will be asked to confirm that they have not received support from any other RS Bursary fund and are committed to taking part in the trip.

There are two closing dates for bursary applications. The first round will award up to five bursaries to students put forward by 1st April 2022. The second round will award a further five bursaries to students put forward before 1st May 2022. In both cases the RS Rep will be notified within one week of the closing date. The bursary amount will then be deducted from the school delegation’s final balance payment.

The delegate fees for these places will be discounted by 40%. In return, the students appointed to the placements will take on the role of journalists and capture the event through the eyes of a student delegate, through photography, film or writing.

In order to apply, students should submit a:

(2) one example of their work that they feel best captures their talent and perspective. This example can be a piece of writing, photograph or short film, and can be uploaded or attached via a link depending on the format of the work.

There are two closing dates for applications. The first round will award placements to up to four to students from applications received 1st April 2022. The second round will award a further four placements to students put forward before 1st May 2022. In both cases the RS Rep will be notified within one week of the closing date, and the student will be asked to confirm their acceptance of the placement.
